Agentic Virtual Machines: What they are and why they matter
The new agentic economy forming beneath modern technology is creating a new spin on an old idea: virtual machines.
In the old days, we would spin up virtual machines to handle workloads or tasks that might have been temporary. An EC2 micro instance could run a database tunnel, a glue service, or a cron job that completed the same work each day.
Now, what if those same boxes were spun up for agentic use cases?
Moving work outside of local Mac minis
As these new virtual machines gain traction, users and companies will start to feel their presence in everyday life. A virtual agent could handle work that would be too risky to run on a personal laptop or too constrained to execute on a phone.
Agentic VMs could open up a third kind of device that fills the gap between them: remote, intelligent execution for any task a user configures it to handle.

With ChatGPT, your work runs on infrastructure you do not control. Local agents create the opposite problem because they stop being useful when you are away from your laptop or your GPUs are unavailable.

Agents can automate many parts of a business or personal life. Set up an AgentVM box and it can act as a personal assistant, calendar planner, or research worker; it can also shop for discounts or operate a process that needs to continue after you close your laptop.
The important change is not that an agent can answer another question. It is that the agent has a computer of its own, with the time and tools needed to take a task from an instruction to a finished result.
A computer that keeps working when you cannot
Agentic VMs are not meant to replace the laptop or phone. They create a place where software can keep working when neither device is the right tool for the job.
That matters because useful agents need more than a chat window. They need time and memory, along with access to files and networks; they also need a machine that a person can inspect or shut down when the work is complete.
The next wave of computing may not be another screen that people carry. It may be a remote computer that waits for instructions, completes the work, and hands the result back when the person is ready. AgentVM is our attempt to build that computer.
